libicu in International Components for Unicode (ICU) 3.8.1 and earlier attempts to process backreferences to the nonexistent capture group zero (aka \0), which might allow context-dependent attackers to read from, or write to, out-of-bounds memory locations, related to corruption of REStackFrames.
The bug was discovered 01/22/2008. The weakness was disclosed 01/28/2008 by Will Drewry (Website). The advisory is shared at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2007-4770 since 09/10/2007. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
