A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Icu Project International Components for Unicode up to 3.8.1 (Project Management Software). Affected by this issue is the function dointerval of the file regexcmp.cpp of the component International Components for Unicode. Heap-based buffer overflow in the doInterval function in regexcmp.cpp in libicu in International Components for Unicode (ICU) 3.8.1 and earlier allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) and possibly have unspecified other impact via a regular expression that writes a large amount of data to the backtracking stack. NOTE: some of these details are obtained from third party information.
The bug was discovered 01/22/2008. The weakness was presented 01/28/2008 by Will Drewry (Website). The advisory is available at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2007-4771 since 09/10/2007. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
