Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 6.18.53/7.2.7/7.3-rc3. Affected by this issue is the function btrfs_start_transaction_fallback_global_rsv/btrfs_orphan_cleanup/drop_verity_items of the component btrfs. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource consumption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-400. The product does not properly control the allocation and maintenance of a limited resource, thereby enabling an actor to influence the amount of resources consumed, eventually leading to the exhaustion of available resources. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: btrfs: handle lack of space when cleaning up verity items When enable_verity() hits the qgroup limit, rollback_verity() needs its own metadata reservation. When the qgroup limit or lack of space refuses the rollback, the whole filesystem is forced read-only even though the qgroup limit was for one subvolume only. Also orphan cleanup at the next mount fails the same way, so the leftover items are never removed: with -EDQUOT the subvolume stays unreachable, and with -ENOSPC on a full filesystem the next read-write mount fails. Start transactions with btrfs_start_transaction_fallback_global_rsv() in btrfs_orphan_cleanup(), drop_verity_items() and rollback_verity(). Those calls only delete items and free the space in the end, so they may use the global reserve and skip the qgroup limit, which avoids -ENOSPC and -EDQUOT.
The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-98279 since 09/25/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. The exploitation needs additional levels of successful authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
Upgrading to version 6.18.54, 7.2.8 or 7.3-rc4 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 4b7ecabd87dc40998fe7870d7975279649229a3b/efa5780b84f066f419a667f6b9542368b2f62074/76bf149cd0298544631e756670b89c399c7acbca is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
