Details
A vulnerability has been found in MIT Kerberos 5-1.2.2 (Network Authentication Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality in the library lib/rpc/rpc_dtablesize.c of the component File Descriptors. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Buffer overflow in the RPC library (lib/rpc/rpc_dtablesize.c) used by libgssrpc and kadmind in MIT Kerberos 5 (krb5) 1.2.2, and probably other versions before 1.3, when running on systems whose unistd.h does not define the FD_SETSIZE macro, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code by triggering a large number of open file descriptors.
The bug was discovered 03/18/2008. The weakness was published 03/18/2008 with Red Hat Security Response Team as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). It is possible to read the advisory at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-0948 since 02/25/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 31609 (CentOS 3 : krb5 (CESA-2008:0181)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115824 (VMware Security Update (VMSA-2008-0008 and VMSA-2008-0009)).
Upgrading to version 5-1.2.2 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
