Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird up to 2.0.12 Wrapper code injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 2.0.12 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Wrapper. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Unspecified vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.13, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via "XPCNativeWrapper pollution."

The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2008 by Gregory Fleischer (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Developers (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1233 since 03/10/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67677 (Oracle Linux 4 : thunderbird (ELSA-2008-0209)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SA:2008:019)).

Upgrading to version 1.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (41443), Tenable (67677), SecurityFocus (BID 28448†), OSVDB (43864†) and Secunia (SA29391†).
