A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird up to 2.0.12 (Web Browser). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Wrapper. Unspecified vulnerability in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.13, Thunderbird before 2.0.0.13, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via "XPCNativeWrapper pollution."
The weakness was disclosed 03/27/2008 by Gregory Fleischer (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Developers (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-1233 since 03/10/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67677 (Oracle Linux 4 : thunderbird (ELSA-2008-0209)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165678 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla Firefox (SUSE-SA:2008:019)).
Upgrading to version 1.1.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
