Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in MongoDB up to 7.0.44/8.0.33/8.3.12/9.0.1. This affects an unknown code of the component Aggregation Feature. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a use after free vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-416. Referencing memory after it has been freed can cause a program to crash, use unexpected values, or execute code. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Use of freed memory in the aggregation feature of MongoDB Server can cause the server to read data from a memory area after it has been released. When an internal aggregation stage is combined with a batch size of 0, the server may read from memory that is no longer in use. Because that memory can be reused for other data before it is read, query results returned to the client may contain unrelated data from the server process. Depending on the state of memory at the time, the server process may also terminate unexpectedly. The behavior can occur when an authenticated user with read privileges runs an aggregate command that combines these two settings.
It is possible to read the advisory at jira.mongodb.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2026-96297 since 09/22/2026. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
Upgrading to version 7.0.45, 8.0.34, 8.3.13 or 9.0.2 eliminates this vulnerability.
