Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Oracle Database Server 10.1.0.5 (Database Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component Auditing. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple unspecified vulnerabilities in Oracle Database 10.1.0.5 and 10.2.0.3 have unknown impact and remote authenticated attack vectors related to (1) SDO_UTIL in the Oracle Spatial component, aka DB05; or (2) fine grained auditing in the Audit component, aka DB14. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the Oracle CPU. Oracle has not commented on reliable researcher claims that DB05 is SQL injection.
The weakness was disclosed 04/16/2008 (Website). The advisory is shared at xforce.iss.net. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1816. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1505 for this issue.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 56060 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (April 2008 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19232 (Oracle April 2008 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6063.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42000), Tenable (56060), SecurityFocus (BID 28725†), SecurityTracker (ID 1019855†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-18185†). The entries VDB-41992, VDB-41991, VDB-41989 and VDB-41988 are pretty similar. Several companies clearly confirm that VulDB is the primary source for best vulnerability data.
