Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in DentonW DevIL up to 1.8.0. This vulnerability affects the function iGetPalette of the file il_gif.cpp of the component GIF image Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a buffer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-120. The product copies an input buffer to an output buffer without verifying that the size of the input buffer is less than the size of the output buffer, leading to a buffer overflow. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
DevIL through 1.8.0 contains a heap-based buffer overflow in iGetPalette() in il_gif.cpp that allows attackers to write beyond a 768-byte palette buffer when loading GIF images. Attackers can supply a crafted two-frame GIF whose second frame uses disposal method 1 with a local colour table, writing up to 384 controlled bytes past the heap allocation and possibly executing code.
The advisory is available at github.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-20286 since 10/14/2026. The exploitation appears to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 10/14/2026).
