Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in python-pillow Pillow up to 12.x. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the component TIFF encoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Pillow is a Python imaging library. Prior to 13.0.0, Pillow's TIFF encoder can read beyond a ColorMap buffer when retained TIFF metadata has a plane size inconsistent with BitsPerSample. A small TIFF can be opened normally and then retain a crafted ColorMap that is reused when the image is saved. An application that re-encodes the attacker's TIFF with libtiff can trigger the out-of-bounds read. This can disclose heap memory in the output or crash the process. This issue is fixed in version 13.0.0.

The advisory is shared for download at github.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2026-112896 since 10/19/2026. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

Upgrading to version 13.0.0 eliminates this vulnerability.
