A vulnerability was found in Oracle Database Server 10.2.0.3/10.2.0.4/10.2.0.5/11.1.0.7/11.2.0.1 (Database Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects the function mdsys.reset_inprog_index. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a sql injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-89. The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. The weakness was disclosed 01/19/2011 by Sumit Siddharth (BSDaemon) with Oracle (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-4420 since 12/06/2010. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1505 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51573 (Oracle Database Multiple Vulnerabilities (January 2011 CPU)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Databases. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 19608 (Oracle Database January 2011 Security Update Multiple Vulnerabilities (CPUJAN2011)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at oracle.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
