Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 Terminal incomplete blacklist

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.0 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component Terminal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a incomplete blacklist vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-184. The product implements a protection mechanism that relies on a list of inputs (or properties of inputs) that are not allowed by policy or otherwise require other action to neutralize before additional processing takes place, but the list is incomplete, leading to resultant weaknesses. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Incomplete blacklist vulnerability in CoreTypes in Apple Mac OS X before 10.5.3 allows user-assisted remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an (1) Automator, (2) Help, (3) Safari, or (4) Terminal content type for a downloadable object, which does not trigger a "potentially unsafe" warning message in (a) the Download Validation feature in Mac OS X 10.4 or (b) the Quarantine feature in Mac OS X 10.5.

The bug was discovered 05/28/2008. The weakness was shared 06/02/2008 by Gynvael Coldwind (Alex) with CORE Security Technologies (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1032 since 02/26/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1562.006 for this issue.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 32477 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115812 (Apple Mac OS X 10.5.3 and Security Update 2008-003 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2008-05-28)).

Upgrading to version 10.5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42711), Tenable (32477), SecurityFocus (BID 29412†), OSVDB (45701†) and Secunia (SA30430†).
