Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Apache Tomcat 5.5.9 through 5.5.26 and 6.0.0 through 6.0.16 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via the name parameter (aka the hostname attribute) to host-manager/html/add.
The bug was discovered 06/02/2008. The weakness was disclosed 06/04/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-1947 since 04/24/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33435 (openSUSE 10 Security Update : tomcat55 (tomcat55-5385)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116251 (Sun Solaris Tomcat Directory Traversal and Cross-Site Scripting Vulnerability (1020086.1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6442.
