The OpenType Compact Font Format (CFF) driver in Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP2, Windows Vista SP1 and SP2, Windows Server 2008 Gold, SP2, and R2, and Windows 7 does not properly validate parameter values in OpenType fonts, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted font, aka "OpenType Font Encoded Character Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 02/08/2011 with Microsoft as MS11-007 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2011-0033 since 12/10/2010. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 51907 (MS11-007: Vulnerability in the OpenType Compact Font Format (CFF) Driver Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2485376)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90685 (Microsoft OpenType Compact Font Format (CFF) Driver Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-007)).
Applying the patch MS11-007 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11955.
