A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Mozilla Firefox (Web Browser). Affected is the function nsblockframe::drainoverflowlines. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-399. The block reflow implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.15, Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 and earlier, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.10 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via an image whose display requires more pixels than nscoord_MAX, related to nsBlockFrame::DrainOverflowLines.
The bug was discovered 07/02/2008. The weakness was disclosed 07/07/2008 with Mozilla as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-2811 since 06/20/2008. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 33399 (CentOS 3 / 4 : seamonkey (CESA-2008:0547)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115851 (Mozilla Firefox and SeaMonkey Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
