A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Apple iTunes 10.x (Multimedia Player Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Buffer overflow in pngpread.c in libpng before 1.2.44 and 1.4.x before 1.4.3, as used in progressive applications, might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PNG image that triggers an additional data row.
The weakness was disclosed 03/03/2011 as HT4554 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2010-1205 since 03/30/2010. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.apple.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
