Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.x IFRAME Rendering input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 and earlier does not properly restrict cross-zone drag-and-drop actions, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to read cookie files via vectors involving an IFRAME element with a SRC attribute containing an http: URL that redirects to a file: URL, as demonstrated by a Facebook game, related to a "cookiejacking" issue, aka "Drag and Drop Information Disclosure Vulnerability." NOTE: this vulnerability exists because of an incomplete fix in the Internet Explorer 9 release.

The issue has been introduced in 03/16/2010. The weakness was presented 08/09/2011 by Rosario Valotta (Full-Disclosure). The advisory is available at archives.neohapsis.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-2383 since 06/03/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 444 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802203 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cookie Hijacking Vulnerability), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family General. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100100 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cross-Zone Local Cookie File Access Security Bypass Vulnerability (MS11-057)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch MS11-057 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
