Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.8 (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Stack-based buffer overflow in the URL parsing implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.17 and SeaMonkey before 1.1.12 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted UTF-8 URL in a link.
The bug was discovered 09/23/2008. The weakness was shared 09/24/2008 by Justin Schuh with IBM X-Force as Bug 443288 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2008-0016 since 12/13/2007. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by dmc in Python and been published 2 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67754 (Oracle Linux 4 : thunderbird (ELSA-2008-0908)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165702 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Mozilla (SUSE-SA:2008:050)).
Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9130.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (42088), Exploit-DB (9663), Tenable (67754), SecurityFocus (BID 31397†) and OSVDB (48780†).
