A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 1.0.8 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Mozilla Firefox before 2.0.0.17 and 3.x before 3.0.2, and SeaMonkey before 1.1.12, allow user-assisted remote attackers to move a window during a mouse click, and possibly force a file download or unspecified other drag-and-drop action, via a crafted onmousedown action that calls window.moveBy, a variant of CVE-2003-0823.
The bug was discovered 09/23/2008. The weakness was disclosed 09/24/2008 by Georgi Guninski (moz_bug_r_a4) with Martijn Wargers as Bug 329385 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.mozilla.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3837 since 08/27/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67744 (Oracle Linux 5 : firefox (ELSA-2008-0879)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. Upgrading to version 1.0.9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 1 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 9130.
