CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Host Integration Server 2000/2004/2006 and classified as very critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function CreateProcess. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a improper authentication vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-287. When an actor claims to have a given identity, the product does not prove or insufficiently proves that the claim is correct. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Microsoft Host Integration Server (HIS) 2000, 2004, and 2006 does not limit RPC access to administrative functions, which allows remote attackers to bypass authentication and execute arbitrary programs via a crafted SNA RPC message using opcode 1 or 6 to call the CreateProcess function, aka "HIS Command Execution Vulnerability."

The weakness was disclosed 10/14/2008 by Stephen Fewer with Harmony Security (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-3466 since 08/04/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/26/2025).

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34404 (MS08-059: Microsoft Host Integration Server (HIS) SNA RPC Request Remote Overflow (956695)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90457 (Microsoft Host Integration Server RPC Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-059)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6381.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44705), Tenable (34404), SecurityFocus (BID 31620†), Secunia (SA32233†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1021043†). The entries VDB-44534, VDB-44533, VDB-44532 and VDB-44531 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
