Heap-based buffer overflow in the Microsoft Message Queuing (MSMQ) service (mqsvc.exe) in Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 allows remote attackers to read memory contents and execute arbitrary code via a crafted RPC call, related to improper processing of parameters to string APIs, aka "Message Queuing Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was presented 10/14/2008 by TippingPoint with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-3479 since 08/04/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3162 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34410 (MS08-065: Microsoft Windows Message Queuing Service RPC Request Handling Remote Code Execution (951071)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115989 (Message Queuing Service Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS08-065)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 30921.
