Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 does not properly handle errors related to using the componentFromPoint method on xml objects that have been (1) incorrectly initialized or (2) deleted, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted HTML document, aka "Uninitialized Memory Corruption Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/22/2001. The weakness was released 10/14/2008 by Ivan Fratric (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint and the Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-3475 since 08/04/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2763 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 34403 (MS08-058: Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Vulnerabilities (956390)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100063 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Cumulative Security Update (MS08-058)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 6467.
