The XSS Filter in Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 allows remote attackers to read content from a different (1) domain or (2) zone via a "trial and error" attack, aka "XSS Filter Information Disclosure Vulnerability."
The issue has been introduced in 03/05/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2011 as MS11-099 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-1992 since 05/09/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1378 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57285 (MS11-099: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2618444)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100114 (Microsoft Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (MS11-099)).
Upgrading to version 9 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch KB2618444 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at support.microsoft.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11745.
