The Microsoft Office Input Method Editor (IME) for Simplified Chinese in Microsoft Pinyin IME 2010, Office Pinyin SimpleFast Style 2010, and Office Pinyin New Experience Style 2010 does not properly restrict access to configuration options, which allows local users to gain privileges via the Microsoft Pinyin (aka MSPY) IME toolbar, aka "Pinyin IME Elevation Vulnerability."

The issue has been introduced in 06/15/2010. The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2011 as MS11-088 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared for download at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2011-2010 since 05/09/2011. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 546 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110167 (Microsoft Office IME (Chinese) Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS11-088)).
