A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Word 2007/2010/2011 (Word Processing Software). Affected is some unknown functionality of the component Document Parser. Use-after-free vulnerability in Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 and SP3, Office 2010 Gold and SP1, and Office for Mac 2011 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Word document, aka "Word Use After Free Vulnerability."
The weakness was disclosed 12/13/2011 by Nikita Tarakanov (DiGiT) with Digital Security Research Group as MS11-089 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2011-1983 since 05/09/2011. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57275 (MS11-089: Vulnerability in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2590602)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110168 (Microsoft Office Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS11-089)).
Applying the patch MS11-089 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13652.
