A vulnerability has been found in xine up to 1.1.11.1 (Multimedia Player Software) and classified as very critical. This vulnerability affects the function parse_reference_atom of the file demux_mng.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Multiple integer overflows in xine-lib 1.1.12, and other 1.1.15 and earlier versions, allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via (1) crafted width and height values that are not validated by the mymng_process_header function in demux_mng.c before use in an allocation calculation or (2) crafted current_atom_size and string_size values processed by the parse_reference_atom function in demux_qt.c for an RDRF_ATOM string.
The bug was discovered 08/22/2008. The weakness was disclosed 11/25/2008 by Will Drewry with CERT (Website). The advisory is available at redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5237 since 11/25/2008. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
