Details
A vulnerability was found in xine xine-lib (Multimedia Player Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is the function read of the file input_file.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:
xine-lib 1.1.12, and other 1.1.15 and earlier versions, does not properly handle (a) negative and (b) zero values during unspecified read function calls in input_file.c, input_net.c, input_smb.c, and input_http.c, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via vectors such as (1) a file or (2) an HTTP response, which triggers consequences such as out-of-bounds reads and heap-based buffer overflows.
The weakness was shared 11/25/2008 by Will Drewry with CERT (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-5239 since 11/25/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 37983 (Ubuntu 6.06 LTS / 7.10 / 8.04 LTS / 8.10 : xine-lib vulnerability (USN-746-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 5 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (44651), Tenable (37983), SecurityFocus (BID 30797†), OSVDB (47751†) and Secunia (SA33544†).
