The bug was discovered 12/03/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/03/2008 by Sebastian Apelt with Virtual Security Research (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2008-5348 since 12/04/2008. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35046 (Fedora 9 : java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.20.b09.fc9 (2008-10860)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185080 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02411)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8606.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47061), Tenable (35046), SecurityFocus (BID 32608†), OSVDB (50505†) and Secunia (SA32991†).
