Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Sun SDKJDK and JRE up to 6u10 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Sun JDK and JRE 6 Update 10 and earlier; JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 16 and earlier; SDK and JRE 1.4.2_18 and earlier; and SDK and JRE 1.3.1_23 and earlier might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code, related to a ConvolveOp operation in the Java AWT library.
The bug was discovered 12/03/2008. The weakness was presented 12/05/2008 by Sebastian Apelt with Virtual Security Research (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2008-5359 since 12/04/2008. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35046 (Fedora 9 : java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.20.b09.fc9 (2008-10860)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185080 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02411)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8606.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47048), Tenable (35046), SecurityFocus (BID 32608†), OSVDB (50496†) and Secunia (SA34233†).
