Integer overflow in Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Sun JDK and JRE 6 Update 10 and earlier; JDK and JRE 5.0 Update 16 and earlier; SDK and JRE 1.4.2_18 and earlier; and SDK and JRE 1.3.1_23 and earlier might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted TrueType font file, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.

The bug was discovered 12/03/2008. The weakness was released 12/03/2008 by Sebastian Apelt with Virtual Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2008-5357 since 12/04/2008. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35046 (Fedora 9 : java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.20.b09.fc9 (2008-10860)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185080 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02411)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8606.
