Sun SDKJDK/JRE up to 6u10 splashscreen.dll memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Sun SDKJDK and JRE up to 6u10 (Programming Language Software). This issue affects some unknown processing in the library splashscreen.dll. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) for Sun JDK and JRE 6 Update 10 and earlier might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted GIF file that triggers memory corruption during display of the splash screen, possibly related to splashscreen.dll.

The bug was discovered 12/03/2008. The weakness was disclosed 12/03/2008 by Sebastian Apelt with Virtual Security Research (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2008-5358 since 12/04/2008. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed in Ruby. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 35046 (Fedora 9 : java-1.6.0-openjdk-1.6.0.0-0.20.b09.fc9 (2008-10860)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185080 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02411)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8606.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (47049), Tenable (35046), SecurityFocus (BID 32608†), OSVDB (50515†) and Secunia (SA34233†). The entries VDB-3956, VDB-45319, VDB-45318 and VDB-45316 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
