A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 3.6.26/9.0 (Web Browser). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Ogg Vorbis File Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Mozilla Firefox before 3.6.26 and 4.x through 9.0, Thunderbird before 3.1.18 and 5.0 through 9.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.7 do not properly initialize nsChildView data structures, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted Ogg Vorbis file.
The weakness was presented 01/31/2012 by regenrecht with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as MFSA2012-07 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0444 since 01/09/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1499.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68460 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 / 6 : libvorbis (ELSA-2012-0136)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119906 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2012:0079)).
Upgrading to version 3.6.26 or 9.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12149.
