Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 9.0 and SeaMonkey before 2.7 on Linux and Mac OS X set weak permissions for Firefox Recovery Key.html, which might allow local users to read a Firefox Sync key via standard filesystem operations.

The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2012 as MFSA2012-09 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2012-0450 since 01/09/2012. The attack needs to be approached locally. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 802582 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
