A vulnerability has been found in Mozilla Firefox up to 9.0 (Web Browser) and classified as problematic. Mozilla Firefox 4.x through 9.0, Thunderbird 5.0 through 9.0, and SeaMonkey before 2.7 allow remote attackers to bypass the HTML5 frame-navigation policy and replace arbitrary sub-frames by creating a form submission target with a sub-frame s name attribute.
The weakness was shared 01/31/2012 by Alex as MFSA2012-03 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at mozilla.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2012-0445 since 01/09/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 57785 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (0a9e2b72-4cb7-11e1-9146-14dae9ebcf89)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 120400 (Solaris Multiple Vulnerabilities in Thunderbird).
Upgrading to version 10.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
