Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Internet Information Services 5.0. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:
The undocumented TRACK method in Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0 returns the content of the original request in the body of the response, which makes it easier for remote attackers to steal cookies and authentication credentials, or bypass the HttpOnly protection mechanism, by using TRACK to read the contents of the HTTP headers that are returned in the response, a technique that is similar to cross-site tracing (XST) using HTTP TRACE.
The bug was discovered 01/02/2003. The weakness was presented 12/27/2003 by Parcifal Aertssen with BEA Systems as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared for download at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2003-1567 since 01/14/2009. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but an exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 11213 (HTTP TRACE / TRACK Methods Allowed), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Web Servers. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 12680 (HTTP TRACE / TRACK Methods Enabled).
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 2056. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 2809.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (14077), Tenable (11213), SecurityFocus (BID 9506†), OSVDB (5648†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-25847†). See VDB-459, VDB-467, VDB-493 and VDB-51672 for similar entries. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
