A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in IBM Lotus Domino 6.x on Linux (Groupware Software). Affected is some unknown processing of the file notes.ini. Lotus Notes Domino 6.0.2 on Linux installs the notes.ini configuration file with world-writable permissions, which allows local users to modify the Notes configuration and gain privileges.
The bug was discovered 01/06/2001. The weakness was presented 01/06/2004 by l0om as not defined posting (Bugtraq). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2004-0029. Access to the local network is required for this attack to succeed. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1095 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:notes.ini it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74186 (Lotus Notes Domino Initialization Files Weak Default Permissions Vulnerability).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at lotus.com.
