A vulnerability has been found in Microsoft Word (Word Processing Software) (affected version not known) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component Email Handler. The manipulation of the argument OBJECT with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Microsoft Outlook 2000 and 2003, when configured to use Microsoft Word 2000 or 2003 as the e-mail editor and when forwarding e-mail, does not properly handle an opening OBJECT tag that does not have a closing OBJECT tag, which causes Outlook to automatically download the URI in the data property of the OBJECT tag and might allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 07/12/2004. The weakness was released 07/10/2004 by James C. Slora Jr. as not defined posting (Bugtraq). It is possible to read the advisory at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2004-2482 since 08/21/2005. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication.
