Google Chrome before 17.0.963.65 does not properly handle text, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via a crafted document.
The weakness was released 03/04/2012 by Chamal De Silva (miaubiz) with Google as 114054 (Website). The advisory is shared at code.google.com. The public release was coordinated with Google. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2011-3040 since 08/09/2011. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.
A private exploit has been developed by miaubiz. It is declared as proof-of-concept. Upgrading to version 17.0.963.65 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at trac.webkit.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
