A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Apple iTunes 10.5 (Multimedia Player Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component WebKit. WebKit, as used in Apple iTunes before 10.6, allows man-in-the-middle attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via vectors related to iTunes Store browsing, a different vulnerability than other CVEs listed in APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1.

The weakness was disclosed 03/07/2012 by Abhishek Arya (wushi) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative as HT5191 as confirmed knowledge base article (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). The advisory is available at support.apple.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2012-0634 since 01/12/2012. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 58319 (Apple iTunes < 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (credentialed check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119974 (Apple iTunes Prior to 10.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2012-03-07-1)).

Upgrading to version 10.6 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
