Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple CUPS up to 1.1.4 (Printing Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function JBIG2SymbolDict::setBitmap. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Multiple buffer overflows in the JBIG2 decoder in Xpdf 3.02pl2 and earlier, CUPS 1.3.9 and earlier, and other products allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted PDF file, related to (1) JBIG2SymbolDict::setBitmap and (2) JBIG2Stream::readSymbolDictSeg.
The weakness was disclosed 04/23/2009 by Braden Thomas (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-0146 since 01/16/2009. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67844 (Oracle Linux 4 / 5 : cups (ELSA-2009-0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165632 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:012)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
