A vulnerability was found in Apple CUPS up to 1.1.4 (Printing Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function JBIG2Stream::readSymbolDictSeg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a numeric error vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-189. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Multiple integer overflows in the JBIG2 decoder in Xpdf 3.02pl2 and earlier, CUPS 1.3.9 and earlier, and other products allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted PDF file, related to (1) JBIG2Stream::readSymbolDictSeg, (2) JBIG2Stream::readSymbolDictSeg, and (3) JBIG2Stream::readGenericBitmap.
The weakness was presented 04/23/2009 by Braden Thomas (Website). The advisory is available at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0147 since 01/16/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38897 (CentOS 4 / 5 : cups (CESA-2009:0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165632 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update (SUSE-SR:2009:012)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
