Details
A vulnerability was found in Apple CUPS up to 1.1.4 (Printing Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple "input validation flaws" in the JBIG2 decoder in Xpdf 3.02pl2 and earlier, CUPS 1.3.9 and earlier, Poppler before 0.10.6, and other products allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file.
The weakness was published 04/23/2009 by Braden Thomas as confirmed advisory (CERT.org). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0800 since 03/04/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38897 (CentOS 4 / 5 : cups (CESA-2009:0429)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165641 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update CUPS (SUSE-SA:2009:024)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50132), Tenable (38897), SecurityFocus (BID 34568†), OSVDB (54473†) and Secunia (SA34755†).
