Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.5.1 (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component CoreGraphics. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
CoreGraphics in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.11 and 10.5 before 10.5.7, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, and iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted PDF file that triggers memory corruption.
The bug was discovered 05/12/2009. The weakness was released 05/13/2009 by Sebastian Apelt (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0145 since 01/16/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059 for this issue.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 38744 (Mac OS X 10.5.x < 10.5.7 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 116453 (Apple Safari 4.0 Not Installed).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50481), Tenable (38744), SecurityFocus (BID 34926†), OSVDB (54451†) and Secunia (SA35074†).
