OpenSSL up to 0.9.8f-4 dtls1_buffer_record memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8f-4 (Network Encryption Software) and classified as problematic. Affected by this issue is the function dtls1_buffer_record. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The dtls1_buffer_record function in ssl/d1_pkt.c in OpenSSL 0.9.8k and earlier 0.9.8 versions allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large series of "future epoch" DTLS records that are buffered in a queue, aka "DTLS record buffer limitation bug."

The bug was discovered 05/16/2009. The weakness was released 05/19/2009 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at rt.openssl.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2009-1377 since 04/23/2009. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 586 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 42996 (Mandriva Linux Security Advisory : openssl (MDVSA-2009:310)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Mandriva Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 86880 (HP System Management Homepage Cross-Site Scripting and Denial of Service Vulnerabilities (c02029444)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (50577), Tenable (42996), SecurityFocus (BID 35001†), OSVDB (54612†) and Secunia (SA35128†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-41652, VDB-45748, VDB-45179 and VDB-48418. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
