A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 0.9.8f-4 (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects the function dtls1_process_out_of_seq_message. Multiple memory leaks in the dtls1_process_out_of_seq_message function in ssl/d1_both.c in OpenSSL 0.9.8k and earlier 0.9.8 versions allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via DTLS records that (1) are duplicates or (2) have sequence numbers much greater than current sequence numbers, aka "DTLS fragment handling memory leak."
The bug was discovered 05/16/2009. The weakness was disclosed 05/19/2009 by Jon Oberheide (Website). The advisory is shared at rt.openssl.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2009-1378 since 04/23/2009. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by Jon Oberheide and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 586 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k.
