Details
A vulnerability was found in Microsoft Windows 2000 (Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The LDAP service in Active Directory on Microsoft Windows 2000 SP4 does not properly free memory for LDAP and LDAPS requests, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a request that uses hexadecimal encoding, whose associated memory is not released, related to a "DN AttributeValue," aka "Active Directory Invalid Free Vulnerability." NOTE: this issue is probably a memory leak.
The issue has been introduced in 02/17/2000. The weakness was disclosed 06/10/2009 by Joshua J. Drake (iDefense) with VeriSign iDefense Labs (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1138 since 03/24/2009. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3400 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 39340 (MS09-018: Vulnerabilities in Active Directory Could Allow Remote Code Execution (971055)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90505 (Microsoft Active Directory Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS09-018)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8214.
