CRLF injection vulnerability in WebKit in Apple Safari before 4.0, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, and iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1 allows remote attackers to inject HTTP headers and bypass the Same Origin Policy via a crafted HTML document, related to cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks that depend on communication with arbitrary web sites on the same server through use of XMLHttpRequest without a Host header.
The bug was discovered 06/08/2009. The weakness was disclosed 06/08/2009 by Tavis Ormandy (Shadow) with Microsoft Vulnerability Research (Website). The advisory is available at vupen.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2009-1697 since 05/20/2009. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 44815 (Debian DSA-1950-1 : webkit - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165174 (SUSE Security Update for Multiple Packages (SUSE-SR:2011:002)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
