This vulnerability appears as CVE-2009-1698. There is no available exploit.
It is recommended to upgrade the affected component.
Details
A vulnerability has been found in Apple Safari (Web Browser) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function attr. The manipulation of the argument numerical with an unknown input leads to a code injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-94. The product constructs all or part of a code segment using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the syntax or behavior of the intended code segment. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
WebKit in Apple Safari before 4.0, iPhone OS 1.0 through 2.2.1, and iPhone OS for iPod touch 1.1 through 2.2.1 does not initialize a pointer during handling of a Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) attr function call with a large numerical argument, which allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted HTML document.
The weakness was presented 06/08/2009 by Thierry Zoller (TippingPoint) with TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2009-1698 since 05/20/2009. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1059 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 67883 (Oracle Linux 3 : kdelibs (ELSA-2009-1128)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155870 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Update for kdelibs (ELSA-2009-1127)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 8043.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51251), Tenable (67883), SecurityFocus (BID 35318†), OSVDB (55006†) and Secunia (SA35379†).
