Details
A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Adobe Acrobat (Document Reader Software). This vulnerability affects an unknown code. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Heap-based buffer overflow in the JBIG2 filter in Adobe Reader 7 and Acrobat 7 before 7.1.3, Adobe Reader 8 and Acrobat 8 before 8.1.6, and Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9 before 9.1.2 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted PDF file that contains JBIG2 text region segments with Huffman encoding.
The weakness was released 06/11/2009 by Alin Rad Pop with Secunia Research (Website). The advisory is shared for download at us-cert.gov. This vulnerability was named CVE-2009-0198 since 01/19/2009. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40805 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.1.2 / 8.1.6 / 7.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165648 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SA:2009:035)).
Upgrading to version 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (51015), Tenable (40805), SecurityFocus (BID 35302†), Secunia (SA34580†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022361†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-48570, VDB-48569, VDB-48568 and VDB-48567. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
