Adobe Acrobat up to 9.1.1 memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Adobe Acrobat (Document Reader Software). This issue affects an unknown code block. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

Heap-based buffer overflow in the JBIG2 filter in Adobe Reader 7 and Acrobat 7 before 7.1.3, Adobe Reader 8 and Acrobat 8 before 8.1.6, and Adobe Reader 9 and Acrobat 9 before 9.1.2 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file that triggers memory corruption.

The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2009 by Security Team (TippingPoint) with Apple Product Security (Website). The advisory is shared at us-cert.gov. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2009-0509 since 02/09/2009. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 40805 (Adobe Acrobat < 9.1.2 / 8.1.6 / 7.1.3 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 165648 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update Acrobat Reader (SUSE-SA:2009:035)).

Upgrading to version 7.0.4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (49239), Tenable (40805), SecurityFocus (BID 35274†), Secunia (SA34580†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1022361†). The entries VDB-48570, VDB-48569, VDB-48568 and VDB-48567 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
