Details
A vulnerability was found in GnuTLS up to 2.12.18/3.0.16 (Network Encryption Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown code block of the component TLS Record Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issue vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-310. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
gnutls_cipher.c in libgnutls in GnuTLS before 2.12.17 and 3.x before 3.0.15 does not properly handle data encrypted with a block cipher, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap memory corruption and application crash) via a crafted record, as demonstrated by a crafted GenericBlockCipher structure.
The weakness was disclosed 03/19/2012 by Matthew Hall (mhall) with Mu Dynamics as confirmed blog post (Website). The advisory is shared at blog.mudynamics.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2012-1573 since 03/12/2012. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Matthew Hall (mhall). It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 80629 (Oracle Solaris Third-Party Patch Update : gnutls (cve_2012_1573_denial_of)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Solaris Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350688 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for gnutls: ALAS-2012-059).
Upgrading to version 2.12.18 or 3.0.16 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12819.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (74167), Tenable (80629), OSVDB (80259†), Secunia (SA48488†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1026828†). The entries VDB-4876 and VDB-59644 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
